Working with Android

When combining an ICY BOX DockingStation of the DK-line and the DisplayLink app with an Android smart device, a complete desktop workstation is created including monitor, mouse and keyboard. With this combination, using smartphones and tablets for work becomes an ease. While keyboard and mouse as well as monitor and speakers are already connected to the DockingStation, the smart device is just waiting to be connected to the ICY BOX and to be used as proper replacement for a PC.

Reading and writing emails, creating presentations and surfing the web - all fast and comfortably with handheld smart device, DisplayLink and ICY BOX.

Using an USB OTG cable, the Android device is connected to an ICY BOX DockingStation which in turn is connected to a monitor, mouse and keyboard. One monitor can be hooked with a maximum screen resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The transmission of audio signals is supported as well and thus headphones or speakers can be connected to the docking station directly.

The following requirements need to be met in order to use an Android device as useful workstation:

• Smartphone or tablet with Android Lollipop (version 5.0 and above)
• USB OTG cable
• ICY BOX DockingStation (IB-DK401, IB-DK402, IB-DK2241AC, IB-DK2401AC, IB-DK2651AC)
• DisplayLink Desktop App available in the GooglePlay Store

4K Technology: Sharper than Sharp

For quite some time now the 4K technology has been used for movies, televisions and displays and sets new standards in the matter of image sharpness. A 4K display brings out pin sharp pictures as it utilizes 4-times the Full HD resolution. The 4K standard is also known by the term of Ultra HD which is subdivided in 4K UHD (2160p) and 8K UHD (4320p). The latter again utilizes 4-times the resolution compared to 4K but is not yet applied broadly in everyday life.

Compared to a Full HD display with its resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, a 4K display provides a screen resolution of 3840x2160 and with that twice as much pixels in height and width. In order to connect 4K televisions and displays and appropriately transfer videos and movies, HDMI® or DisplayPort interfaces are used which match the visual content of 4K.

ICY BOX provides several products regarding 4K in order to keep the use of that new technology as easy as possible. There is also accessory for older devices that do not support 4K right away which enable the use of the sharp resolution. Those products include several adapters with 4K support as well as DockingStations. They expand a PC or notebook by using a USB 3.0 connector, and the expansion is not limited to 4K capable HDMI® but also comprises several USB, audio and network connections as well.

The following ICY BOX products with 4K support are available:

IB-AC506

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI® adapter

IB-AC508
DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI® adapter

IB-AC513
USB 3.0 to DisplayPort 1.2 adapter

IB-AC514
USB 3.0 to HDMI® adapter

IB-DK2401AC
DockingStation connected via USB 3.0 expanding to HDMI® and several other interfaces

Frequently asked questions regarding audio products

Questions concerning headphones

1.1 My ICY BOX headphones don’t work, what can I do? Please try the following steps: 1) Check whether the audio cable is connected correctly with the sound source. Ideally try it with a different device. 2) Is the sound volume amped? Both the audio source and the volume control on your ICY BOX headphones (if available) must not be muted. 3) In case you are using headphones with active noise cancelling: Are there batteries in the headphones or is a built-in rechargeable battery loaded? With the exception of the Kontor Heads, our headphones with active noise cancelling do not work without loaded batteries. 1.2 Are large headphones better than in-ears? There is no right or wrong as both types are made for different situations. Large headphones like the ICY BOX Big City Vibes cover your ears completely thanks to the comfortably designed ear beds. They effectively absorb background noise and there is plenty of space for a big driver (loudspeaker) in the inside. However, there are some situations where large headphones aren’t suitable. When playing sports, for example, they may slip back and forth despite the comfortable design. In-ears are made exactly for such situations. They are especially tiny and lightweight and cannot slip in any direction. It is however difficult to develop drivers that are able to reproduce the whole frequency spectrum on such limited space. For this reason the ICY BOX in-ear headphones possess a dynamic loudspeaker design that allows them to play even deep frequencies astonishingly well. 1.3 What is noise cancelling? Noise cancelling is a sophisticated technology that allows headphones to eliminate background noise. This works by using microphones that record external noises which are then weakened by destructive interference. Some ICY BOX headphones support Noise Cancelling, for example the Big City Vibes or Kontor Heads. The result is uninterrupted music pleasure without the background noise of daily life. 1.4 How good is the bass of ICY BOX headphones? Audiophiles can differentiate between high, middle and low frequencies. Low frequencies between 0-150 Hz are called “bass”. Due to physical reasons, bass frequencies need a relatively large surface that allows the environmental air to vibrate. Therefore bass speakers are usually much bigger than tweeters. These circumstances create problems in the development of headphones. Space is very limited and engineers have to accept this challenge. ICY BOX headphones make use of different technical refinements to play a balanced but still tangible bass. Try them out and be surprised! 1.5 What is impedance? Impedance is technically the resistance of alternating current. In simpler terms: Lower impedance requires less power to amplify the sound. Portable sound sources like mp3 players or smartphones have quite low power output compared to AV receivers, for example. ICY BOX headphones therefore boast especially low impedance and powerful audio performance. 1.6 What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth is a technology for wireless data transmission. Two Bluetooth devices are connected with each other (“paired”) and are then able to communicate. So a keyboard can be attached to a smartphone or a cool headphone can be used without annoying cables.

Frequently asked questions regarding external enclosures

Questions concerning external enclosure

Questions concerning external enclosures

General

The hard drive / SSD is not recognized?
- Make sure that your HDD/SSD is placed correctly inside the NAS and that the connectors are connected.

- If the HDD or SSD is new, it must be first formatted and partitioned before it can be used by the operating system. This is how to partition you HDD/SSD with Windows 7 [https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/gg309170.aspx] / Windows 8 [http://www.disk-partition.com/windows-8/partition-hard-drive-windows-8.html] / MacOS X [http://osxdaily.com/2011/04/26/partition-hard-drive-mac-os-x/]

- Please use the USB ports on the back side of your PC. the front USB ports might not provide enough power for the enclosure to properly function.

- Make sure that the power supply is connected to the external enclosure and that the power switch is turned ON (Only by 3.5" enclosures).

- Try connecting the external enclosure to a different USB port.

- Try connecting the external enclosure with a different USB cable.

- Update the USB 3.0/USB 3.1 drivers for your OS/Motherboard. The most actual USB drivers can be found on the internet website of your motherboards manufactorer.

- While connecting with an eSATA connetion: Connect your external enclosure with eSATA when the system is running. Your motherboard must have HotSwap support. In your motherboard's manual and on your motherboard's manufactorer website you can find further information if your motherboard has HotSwap support. In order to make sure the enclosure itself is working, try connecting it via the USB port.

Can i connect my enclosure with eSATA and USB at the same time?
- No. Both interfaces cannot run at the same time.

Where can i find drivers for my device?
- The actual drivers for your device can be found in the [LINK]Download Center[/] in the support category. The support category can by each product directly above the product description. When using the msot current operating systems it is mostly already pre-installed with current drivers therefore the need to install the driver manually is less probable.

Do i need a power supply for my 2.5" enclosure?
In general, an additional power supply is not necessary. Many ICY BOX external enclosures have a 5 V connection available in case more power is needed. A power supply is not included in the package content.

Interesting facts about the new USB 3.1 standard
The USB interface has been the standard for PC hardware and the new USB 3.1 standard entails several improvements. Not only the data transfer rates are much faster but also the charging of smart devices. And finally, the reversible-plug connector is introduced to USB as well.

Compared to USB 3.0 the transfer rates are doubled, thus the USB 3.1 interface achieves speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s which makes the interface fast enough to even max out current SSDs.

Another novelty, the reversible-plug USB Type-C connector, can be plugged into an appropriate USB Type-C connector. Without worrying about its directions, it will fit either way. USB Type-C is able to connect monitors via its USB interface. At the same time, data can flow further using the very same USB port. Theoretically, the transfer rates should suffice to connect 5K monitors which are not yet widely-used.

On top of that the new Type-C connector allows the use of Power Delivery (PD). A feature which provides the possibility to charge devices using up to 100 Watt. Supposably, even notebooks could be charged via USB. In the near future it might even be possible for the new Type-C interface to become the new standard for smartphones, tablets and other smart devices because of the connector's small size.

The already well-established USB 3.0 interfaces Type-A and Micro-B will still be preserved for the future, though, and will also have transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit/s. Whether Type-C is completely going to replace the old-established USB interfaces is yet to be awaited. In the meanwhile, the compatibility between the old USB types and the new Type-C is ensured by already available USB adapters or a PCI-E expansion card. This way the new USB type remains compatible with older PCs or notebooks, even without having Type-C ports.

IP protection classes and their meaning
Several ICY BOX and KeySonic products have a so called IP protection class (e.g. IP54 or IP66). This IP indication specifies the level of protection against certain environmental conditions, particularly against foreign particles (e.g. dust) and water.

The IP protection classes are defined by two digits and are subdivided into different levels. While the first digit specifies the protection against foreign particles, the second digit defines the degree of protection against moisture.

IP protection classes:

Level      Meaning
0               No protection
1               Protection against objects with a diameter > 50 mm
2               Protection against objects with a diameter > 12.5 mm
3               Protection against objects with a diameter > 2.5 mm
4               Protection against objects with a diameter > 1.0 mm
5               Dust protected
6               Dust tight

Level      Meaning
1               Protection against dripping water
2               Protection against dripping water when tilted up to 15°
3               Protection against spraying water
4               Protection against splashing of water
5               Protection against water jets
6               Protection against powerful water jets
7               Protection against temporary immersion
8               Protection against permanent immersion
9               Protection against high-pressure cleaning / steam cleaning

This means that the external ICY BOX enclosure IB-276U3 with protection level IP66 is dust tight and protected against powerful water jets.

In addition to the dust and water proof IB-276U3, there is the IB-278U3 (IP54) and the IB-279U3 (IP65), all of which are external enclosures for 2.5" drives. Regarding KeySonic keyboards mainly those from the industrial line (like KSK-5230IN) comply with IP68 protection class.
